Director General MARDI

Dear Colleagues and Distinguished Guests,
It is with great pleasure and a profound sense of responsibility that I welcome you to the 34th MAVMA and the 7th ICAN Congress 2024. This year's event is particularly momentous, where our collaboration with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), heralds a new chapter in our commitment to advancing the fields of veterinary science and animal nutrition.
The theme for this year, “Shaping Tomorrow: Food Safety, Food Security, and Pet Companionship Through Innovation”, underscores the critical and interwoven challenges we face in our professions. In a world where food safety and security are of paramount importance, and the role of pets in our lives continues to evolve, innovation stands as the cornerstone of our future. This theme invites us to explore ground-breaking solutions and foster interdisciplinary collaborations that will drive us towards a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient future.
As we convene this year, we are provided with a unique platform to bridge the gap between diverse sectors, bringing together experts, practitioners, and industry leaders from both public and private domains. It is through such vibrant exchanges that we can stay at the forefront of advancements in veterinary medicine, animal nutrition, and the broader agricultural landscape. The sessions and interactions planned are designed to spark new ideas and cultivate partnerships that will benefit both our fields and the communities we serve.
As we embark on this journey together, it is my sincere hope that this Congress will not only deepen our understanding of the complex issues at hand but also strengthen the bonds between veterinarians and animal nutritionists. Our shared goal is to create a future where the well-being of animals and the health of our food systems are safeguarded through innovative practices and collaborative efforts.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the distinguished speakers, participants, and organizers who have dedicated their time and expertise to this event. Special thanks go to our co-organizer, MARDI, whose partnership has been invaluable in bringing this Congress to fruition. Foreword
THE CHAIRMAN OF THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
34TH MALAYSIAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (MAVMA) CONGRESS AND 7TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ANIMAL NUTRITION (7TH ICAN) 2024.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I welcome all of you to the 34th Malaysian Veterinary Medical Association (MAVMA) and 7th International Conference on Animal Nutrition (ICAN) Congress 2024. After having a successful ICAN last year, MARDI in collaboration with MAVMA is organising a bigger event for sharing broader scopes of scientific knowledge and industrial experiences particularly in the field of animal nutrition and veterinary medicine.
The 7th International Conference on Animal Nutrition (7th ICAN) 2024 is the seventh in the series of animal nutrition conferences and will focus on domestic feed production and substitution, natural alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters, enzyme supplementation, feed safety, enhancing nutrient utilization, mitigating greenhouse gas production and feed processing technologies. Feed is a major cost component accounting for 70% of the total cost of animal production. As the Malaysian feed industry is very dependent on imported feed ingredients, this dependency may become increasingly unsustainable in the long term as global warming is beginning to have a negative impact on grain production. To date, the goals of finding feed substitution, commercially produce feed grain production and sustaining feed self-sufficiency remain challenging. The interactions at this conference can help to identify constraints in the feed industry, recommend effective and practical approaches to feed substitution and increase feed self-sufficiency in Malaysia.
In this congress, there is a good balance of papers from industry speakers, research organizations, local and foreign universities on the topics relevant to the theme. I look forward to your active participation and a successful congress.
Malaysian Veterinary Medical Association (MAVMA) is a professional association for all registered veterinary surgeons under the Malaysian Veterinary Council. The association is also opened to veterinary scientists as associate members, veterinary students. Other veterinary related associations can also be affiliated to MAVMA.
